With an area of 6150 m2, this park is known as the “Pelican pit” park. By occupying the area where the well-known “El Pelicano” children´s nursery was located. It was renovated in the first decade of the 21st century.

Layout of the park

It is located right next to Puertas de Tierra, housing the garden area part of the stretches of wall in between two turrets of the Defensive Wall of Puertas de Tierra in the Plaza de la Constitución.

After its renovation, this green area connects with the pedestrian path that crosses much of this pit from Puertas de Tierra and the Plaza de la Constitución with the train station and the new bus station in the city.

This pit, or moat-like trench was part of the defensive system of the city called “Glacis”, formed by an advance bastion flanked by two semi-bastions.

In the first half of the twentieth century, before the growth of the city by the areas outside the walls, the possibility of demolishing the whole area and allowing greater access to vehicles to the centre of the city was considered.
