The old small square, named Plazuela del Carbón, which, at the beginning of the 19th century would be extended with land reclaimed from the sea ……

…..with the demolition of the defensive walls to create the current Spain Square, was also known in 1688 as Plazuela de la Madera and Barranco del Carbón. It was used by the city for storing and selling coal until 1788 when the land was auctioned to build houses and the square was renamed.
