…..like the Perennial Glasswort (Salicornia perennis) or the Limoniastrum (Limoniastrum monopetalum) accumulate a high content of salts. They used to be burned in order to obtain their ashes, called “barrillas”, as they were rich in soda (sodium carbonate) which was used for the manufacture of soap, mixing it with oil or grease. It was also used in glass manufacturing and furthermore in the dye industry. This ash production was a prosperous business until the 19th century, when sodium carbonate began to be obtained by other methods.
