Night-blooming Jasmine, Lady of the night
Cestrum nocturnum
The Night Jasmine is a plant native to Santo Domingo and Haiti.
It is a shrub or tree that grows up to 5 metres tall. The leaves are ovate or elliptical. The inflorescences are in the form of short clusters with many flowers. The fruits are spherical, white berries.
It is widely used as an ornamental plant, to enjoy the deep scent of its fragrant flowers on summer evenings.
It prefers sunny exposures, although it can thrive in a shady area where it will produce profuse foliage but no flowers.
The Lady of the Night can be found in practically all the gardens of Cádiz, and one might say that it is the characteristic scent of the city’s gardens.
